Not Everyone Gets to Play

by | Mar 20, 2024

Earlier this week, we discussed how every major league baseball team focuses a substantial amount of time and resources on hiring and developing inexperienced players.

Teams do this because hiring young players offers significant advantages that allow them to be more competitive.

Have you noticed what these teams don’t do?

They don’t just let anyone play during spring training.

To get invited onto the field, a player must meet a high standard.

It would be a huge mistake to let average high-school-level baseball players onto the field to compete with elite athletes.

But that’s exactly what many brokers did during the Covid years.

And as you might expect, it resulted in over one million agents doing one or fewer transactions in 2023.

If you choose to play the new agent recruiting game in today’s market, you must raise your standard.

You no longer have the time, resources, or margins to spend on individuals who are not both talented and committed.

Change your focus to finding the rawest talent and holding them accountable to high expectations.

This is the new agent formula that works–both in the big leagues and in the best brokerages.

Focus Less on What Your Competitors Offer

Focus Less on What Your Competitors Offer

While candidates will naturally consider other alternatives (commonly what a competitor is offering), it’s the least important issue for getting them to make a change. During the interview and follow-up conversations, don’t make the mistake of focusing too much time and energy on what your competitors are offering.
